Talent Match: Manal rises up the ranks in record time
A young woman who was offered a six-month temporary work placement with a Digbeth company has risen up the ranks in record time to take up one of the firm’s most senior roles.
Manal Said, aged 24, began work at DMN Logistics just two years ago.
But now the company – leaders in moving single vehicles around the UK – have offered her a top role.
Manal, who lives in Winson Green has been appointed Bromley Street company’s recruitment consultant – responsible for looking after a fleet of around 170 people and vehicles.
The role involves interviewing and recruiting drivers and ensuring the huge range of logistical issues involved in moving vehicles all around the UK runs as smoothly as possible. Manal gained the opportunity through Talent Match Birmingham and Solihull, a pre-employment programme that plans to work with more than 800 jobless young adults across Birmingham and Solihull, to help them secure and sustain work.
Manal said: “I love the job and, having been given the opportunity, wanted to prove myself as best as I could. I must admit it’s come as a bit of a shock to have gone so far so quickly, but it’s also enormously rewarding to see the faith that the team at DMN has put in me. I can’t praise the Talent Match programme enough. Enrolling on the programme has given me a chance to get on at a time when I really didn’t expect it.”
Each participant going through the programme has their own coach and in-work support. Since the programme began four years ago, more than 600 young long-term unemployed young people have benefited from Talent Match Birmingham and Solihull.
Rebecca Knight, Engagement, Resource and Employment Officer with Talent Match Birmingham and Solihull, said Manal had proved an inspiration to other young people on the programme, and that there had been a “perfect fit” between DMN Logistics and Manal.
She said: “It’s always amazing when a participant gets a job offer at the end of their placement, but Manal has proved an exceptional young woman. It’s been a privilege to see her flourish in this role.”
Manal’s mentor at DMN has been operations manager Sarah White. She said: “For us, it’s all about getting the right person in place, and in a business like ours, the people are everything. It’s also great for us as a company to give a chance for someone to get their foot on the employment ladder. Manal has grabbed that opportunity with both hands.”
